Crowded teeth
Teeth overlapping, twisting, or stuck behind each other because there isn't enough room. Crowding is the #1 reason people get braces, and it's also the most straightforward thing we fix.
What crowding is
Crowding is a space problem: the jaw is a little too small for the teeth, or the teeth are a little too big for the jaw. Teeth solve it the only way they can, by overlapping, rotating, or erupting out of line. Mild crowding is a couple of slightly crooked front teeth. Severe crowding is teeth stuck behind others or unable to come in at all (impacted).
What causes it
- Genetics: jaw size and tooth size are inherited separately, and sometimes they don't match
- Losing baby teeth too early, so neighboring teeth drift into the gap
- A narrow upper jaw, often connected to mouth breathing or habits
- Wisdom teeth pushing from behind (a common cause of adult crowding after braces)
- Skipping retainer wear after previous treatment
Why it matters
Crowded teeth are harder to brush and floss, which means more cavities and gum problems over a lifetime. Overlapping teeth wear unevenly and can chip. And crowding tends to get worse, not better, as we age. Fixing it early is easier and cheaper than fixing it later.
How we treat crowding
Kids (7 to 10): make room early
If we see crowding while the adult teeth are still coming in, a palatal expander or space maintainer during Phase 1 can create room so the permanent teeth erupt straighter. This often makes Phase 2 shorter and can avoid extractions later. Early treatment →
Teens and adults: braces or Invisalign
Braces handle all levels of crowding, including severe. Invisalign works well for mild to moderate crowding and is a favorite for adults whose teeth drifted after childhood braces. In some moderate cases we create a little space by slimming the sides of a few teeth (IPR); in severe cases, removing a tooth or two may be the best path. We'll walk you through the options.
How long does it take?
Mild crowding: sometimes as little as 6 to 12 months. Moderate: 12 to 18 months. Severe: 18 to 24 months or more. Adults whose teeth just drifted a little after braces often finish fastest.

Can crowded teeth be fixed without braces?
Mild to moderate crowding can often be treated with Invisalign clear aligners. More severe crowding usually needs braces.
Will I need teeth pulled?
Most patients don't. Early expansion in kids and modern techniques in teens and adults avoid extractions in the majority of cases.
My teeth got crowded again after braces years ago. What now?
Very common. A shorter round of Invisalign or braces usually fixes it, followed by a retainer you actually wear this time. Adult treatment →
Do wisdom teeth cause crowding?
They can contribute, especially in the lower front teeth. Your orthodontist will look at them on the X-ray.
