Why retainers matter
Teeth have a memory. After braces or Invisalign, they'll try to drift back toward where they started, especially in the first year. A retainer holds everything steady while the bone and gums settle in. Skip it, and months of treatment can slowly undo itself.
Most patients wear a retainer full-time for a few months, then nights only. Your orthodontist will give you the exact schedule.
Types of retainers we offer
Clear removable retainers
Thin, clear trays that look a lot like Invisalign aligners. Nearly invisible, easy to clean, and easy to take out. The most popular choice.
Hawley retainers
The classic acrylic-and-wire retainer. Durable, adjustable, and it lasts for years with good care.
Permanent (bonded) retainers
A thin wire bonded behind the front teeth. Nothing to remember, nothing to lose. Great for lower front teeth, which like to shift the most.
Retainer replacement in El Paso
Retainers get lost, chewed by dogs, and left on cafeteria trays. It happens. If you need a replacement, call any of our offices. We'll take a quick scan and get a new one made, usually within a few days.
You don't have to have been a Smile 4 Less patient. If you finished treatment somewhere else (including out of state, or across the border) and need a retainer, we're happy to help.
Retainer care
- Brush it gently with a soft toothbrush and cool water every day. No hot water (it warps).
- Keep it in its case when it's not in your mouth. Napkins are where retainers go to disappear.
- Keep it away from pets. Seriously.
- If it cracks, feels loose, or stops fitting, call us before it gets worse.

How much does a replacement retainer cost?
It depends on the type. Call your closest office and we'll give you a straight answer over the phone.
How long do I have to wear a retainer?
Nights, basically forever. That's the honest answer. Full-time at first, then nightly to keep your smile where it is for the long haul.
My retainer doesn't fit anymore. What now?
Don't force it. Call us. If your teeth have shifted a little, we may be able to make a new retainer; if they've moved more, a short round of aligners can bring them back.
Can I get a retainer if I wasn't your patient?
Yes. We see plenty of people who moved to El Paso or finished treatment elsewhere. A quick visit and a scan is all it takes.
