Gap teeth
A gap between the front teeth (a diastema) or spaces between several teeth. Some people love theirs. If you don't, closing a gap is one of the quicker things we do.
What causes gaps
- Teeth that are small for the jaw, leaving extra room
- A low or thick frenum, the little band of tissue between the upper front teeth and the lip, which can hold a gap open
- Missing teeth, where neighbors drift into the space
- Habits like thumb sucking or tongue thrusting that push front teeth forward and apart
- Normal development in kids: a gap between the front teeth at age 7 or 8 is common and often closes on its own when the canines come in
- Gum disease in adults, which can let teeth loosen and spread
Does a gap need treatment?
Not always. If it's a young child, we usually watch it. If it's a small gap you're happy with, it's your smile. Gaps are worth treating when they trap food and irritate the gums, when they're part of a bigger spacing or bite problem, when they're caused by gum disease, or simply when you'd like them closed.

Braces
For multiple gaps, larger spaces, or spacing that's part of a bite problem, braces give the most control. Sometimes gaps are closed on purpose in the same treatment that fixes crowding elsewhere.
When the frenum is involved
If a thick frenum is holding the gap open, a minor procedure (frenectomy) may be recommended, usually after the gap is closed, so it stays closed. We coordinate with your dentist.
When a tooth is missing
We can close the space orthodontically, or hold it open and straighten everything so your dentist can place an implant or bridge. We'll plan it together.

Will my child's front-tooth gap close on its own?
Often, yes, when the permanent canines come in around age 11 to 13. Have it checked around age 7 so we can watch it.
How long does it take to close a gap with Invisalign?
A single small gap can close in a few months. It depends on the size of the gap and what else the bite needs.
Do gaps come back after treatment?
They can, which is why a retainer (often a bonded one behind the front teeth) is so important after closing a gap.
Can bonding or veneers fix a gap instead?
Sometimes, for a very small gap. Orthodontics moves the actual teeth without adding material, which is often the better long-term fix. Your dentist and orthodontist can help you compare.
