What Texas Medicaid actually covers

Texas Medicaid (and Texas CHIP) covers dental care for kids: checkups, cleanings, fillings, and emergencies. What it does not cover is orthodontic treatment for the reasons most families want it: crooked teeth, crowding, gaps, or a bite that's off. Those are considered "routine" orthodontics, and the state doesn't pay for them.

There's a very narrow exception for medically necessary cases, usually severe conditions like cleft palate or a serious handicapping malocclusion, and those go through Medicaid's own approval process with Medicaid-enrolled dental providers. It's not something an orthodontic office can sign you up for, and the overwhelming majority of kids don't qualify.

Because of this, Smile 4 Less does not accept Texas Medicaid or CHIP for braces or Invisalign. That's a state rule, not our choice, and we'd rather tell you straight than waste your time.
