Metal braces
The classic. Stainless steel brackets bonded to the front of the teeth, connected by a wire, adjusted every 6 to 8 weeks. Today's brackets are smaller and smoother than the ones from your childhood. Ceramic (clear) braces
Same design as metal, but the brackets are made of tooth-colored ceramic that blends in. Same results, a lot less noticeable. The trade-offs: brackets are slightly larger and a bit more delicate, and the clear ties can tint from dark foods between visits (we replace them every time). Costs a little more than metal. Self-ligating braces
These use a small built-in clip instead of elastic ties to hold the wire. Brands include Damon and similar systems. The claimed benefits are slightly less friction and sometimes fewer adjustment visits. In practice, results depend far more on the orthodontist's plan than on the bracket type. Lingual braces
Braces bonded to the back of the teeth, so they're invisible from the front. They're custom-made, more expensive, harder to clean, and can affect speech for a few weeks. For most patients who want invisible, clear aligners are a better fit. We'll talk through it if you're interested.
Clear aligners (Invisalign)
